Spencer Yeh solo at Skylab in Columbus (violin shredder)/ Graveyards + Spencer Yeh in Delaware Ohio, wild and muscular/ LambÕs Bread + Spencer Yeh and James from the Skaters at Gallery Upstairs in Columbus OH, quiet and restrained/ Burning Star Core at Lil Brothers (two piece with Trevor Tremaine covering Faust and Tony Conrad) Ê Spencer Yeh is the best ensemble player in noise. When Spencer plays with groups he isnÕt a full time member of, he elevates them all (including the set he did with John Wiese at Lil Brothers and the Jackie o Motherfucker one at Skylab). Ê Russian Tsarcasm in Worcester Mass. in a room supposed to look like the inside of a shipÕs hullÉSLIME FREAK Ê Brian Miller and Kevin Shields at Bourbon St in Columbus - Awesome to see Columbus metal heads get down to this. Ê International Noise Conference in Miami: So many great sets, for me though the standouts were: Ê Seekers of the Claw: I only caught the tail end but there needs to be more boardroom style noise Jessica Rylan, one of my favorites Dynasty, the greatest band in America this past year Social Junk, fucking wild, man. Have been hit or miss in the past, but this year they really brought it, and in Miami they were probably the best band of the fest, their racket was out of control Ê Best bill of the year: Ê Coughs/ Dynasty/ Bloodyminded in Chicago in the Summer Ê Total basement meltdown. So many people so hot. This might have been an even better Dynasty show than the Miami one, and the best Coughs show ever. One of my favorite bands. And Bloodyminded played!!! Few earn the right to just sit there while they play. These guys could hide under the table and I wouldn't mind. Neon Hates You Salutes Our Nation's Veterans at the Smell on Nov 11th - Pedestrian Deposit gave what may be the best noise set ever performed. Not only emotionaly intense, but so clearly delivered that a bunch of my noise-hating friends said that they now love noise music. New Flesh followed it up without being overshadowed and then Captain Ahab threw my favorite dance party of the year. 2nd Annual LA Zoo Ruins - In these rotting cages where the old LA Zoo once stood nearly 2 dozen noise/folk/weirdo acts performed without the comfort of outlets. Not only a ton of creative sollutions, but also a warm fun time in the sun. INC - Sets don't get more reckless nor more full of love than what INC invokes. Bands don't make it all the way down to florida in the middle of winter for a fest that doesn't pay unless they plan on going balls out. Babyland / Realicide / Kevin Shields at the Smell (early Summer) - Old school industrial punkers Babyland packed the place. Kevin Shields played through 3 PA's and it sounded like the building was getting knocked down. Realicide wooed a horde of teenage girls while I learned that Robert Inhuman is the most spiritual man in music today. 8 Bit Porno at some house party in Tempe AZ - Ryan of 8BP cut his hand open and started whipping the blood in big gushing torrents all over the walls and ceiling and floor. Then I fainted as he laughed like a maniac. Thats a hard show to forget! Argumentix / Dead/Bird / Anni Rossi / Brian Miller & Kevin Shields / Rollin Hunt at a house party in Val Verde - A huge mosh pit while Argumentix sang about his dead mother in the center of the crowd. No lights on except a single flashlight being pointed at Argumentix's head. Like being in a dream. Extreme aggresion and sorrow at the same time, in a Lynch like setting. Shit. The Tarantula Hill benefit at 611 was pretty hot. 7. Plums at The Red and The Black. Pretty rad guitar improv groove, they should absolutely play out more, breast-feeding schedules be damned. 8. Noise and intimacy were served in a reggae sports bar. There was no Òheather shameÓ in the Heathen game. Kim Gordon began the M/D set behind a drum kit. John Olson combed his hair onstage, but Graveyards were unable to will the Pistons to victory. Olson joined Hair Police and for a few moments they had a DJ light showÑThurston commandeered the clubÕs control panel and flipped a switchÑbut the sound guy decided to shut it off as soon as he noticed. 3) Be Your Own Pet, Whirlwind Heat, Thurston Moore & Bark Haze @ P.A.C.E., Easthampton, MA, 6.9.06 Saw this on a church sign on my way to Easthampton: Resist the DevilÉSubmit to his Enemy. TM put three Rather Ripped songs (Rapture, Incinerate, Pink Steam) through his Peavey Bandit 65 for the packed house, then announced ÒWeÕre gonna do a little Bark Haze.Ó Andrew joined him for a literal throwdownÑof guitars, amps, chairs, anything onstage. Whirlwind Heat was drums, bass, air guitar, jumps, and trash bag helmets. BYOP was brief, fierce, and smile-inducing. 4) Mission of Burma @ MASS MoCA, North Adams, MA, 7.1.06 A phenomenal two-set show outdoors on a gorgeous summer night at a fantastic venue. 5) Konono No. 1 @ Pearl Street Ballroom, Northampton, MA, 7.20.06 A hot night of trance dancingÑmy clothes were still wet after the one-hour drive home. These Congolese musicians understand what Mark E. Smith defines as the three RÕs: repetition, repetition, repetition. 6) Sonic Youth, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Awesome Color @ McCarren Park Pool, Brooklyn, NY, 8.12.06 Thousands of people in the pool swimming through the heat of Awesome ColorÕs rock were then cooled by the costumes of YYYs. SY owned the night, the sky, and the city. I hope Dan Graham was there to hear Kim dedicate the ÒShaking HellÓ encore to him. 7) Deerhoof @ McCarren Park Pool, Brooklyn, NY, 8.13.06 Free Pool Party Sunday afternoon amazement in power trio formationÑthey came onstage dancing to the beats ?uestlove was rocking during his DJ set, and proceeded to segue into an improvised jam that let him fade out and slip away. 8) Cecil Taylor with Henry Grimes and Pheeroan akLaff @ The Artists Collective, Hartford, CT, 10.21.06 Dollie McLean introduces Cecil, who walks onstage wearing a black doo rag, dark glasses, what appears to be three pairs of white tube socks, no shoes, black workout pants with elastic leg openings cinched roughly at mid-shin, black tank top, white karate belt, and a pair of mustard yellow pants draped over his shoulders. He says a poem and heads for the piano. Henry and Pheeroan are in suits. Ten minutes into the first set, Cecil throws the pants off his shoulders and keeps on improvising for another thirty minutes without pause. Awesome. 9) Tony Conrad @ sonic.focus, Providence, RI, 11.4.06 There were other performers this night, in this black box theater in an English department building at Brown, but they were forgotten once Mr. Conrad set up his lamp in the corner and cast his shadow on the enormous sheet he had draped diagonally across the room. He bowed his violin cyclically through the overtone series along with pre-recorded cello and bass tracks, and many of us succumbed to the hypnosis of his unbroken amplified arco adventure. What made this performance memorable, though, was the shocking stoppage after half an hour or soÑthe otherworldly cave vibe was destroyed as TC slipped back into his nutty professor bit and blurted out a nervous explanation like ÒI must have stepped on a cord or something.Ó There was faint laughter from the crowd, but then he started his accompaniment again and went right back to playing as if this was the sort of thing you could just jump right back into. The phrase Òdronus interruptusÓ kept repeating in my head as I pondered the hilarity of minimalism. 10) The Evens @ Charter Oak Cultural Center, Hartford, CT, 12.10.06 Ian Mackaye and Amy Farina jam econo.
