Using a PA designed for Broadway musicals (which means the loudest, clearest noise anyone has ever performed). Kevin Shields was so insane through this PA that even Scolaris in San Diego, a venue known for being noise-friendly for years now, unplugged her in a total freak out rage by an employee there. * DJ Dog Dick @ Pehrspace in LA; DJ Dog Dick / Matt Brinkman collab @ Hyperion Lounge in LA: noise and hiphop brought together in that way the kids love nowadays. Angst and moshing at the hipster-populated Hyperion Lounge was perfect conflict. * Social Junk all los angeles tour dates: The greatest universal rock band in the nation. Complete mastery of this-shouldn't-really-work-let-alone-be-repeatable lo-fi thrift store frankenstein gear. Magic is in their hands. * Realicide / Vankmen / tik///tik 3-way collab @ Pehrspace in LA: Over an hour of completely engaging noise-gabber that kept the audience moving like almost nothing in LA can (and considering that this is the home of Ravesploitation, that is saying a lot). * Rale / Monsturo tagteam set @ Pehrspace in LA: opening for Demons and Smegma meant a ton of hippies in the audience, all of which were totally bummed on these dudes' sounds. Completely threatening. * Mincemeat Or Tenspeed @ Pehrspace in LA: Feedback that the entire audience dances to. There is a reason that Dan Deacon listed this guy on his Pitchfork top 10. * Winners @ Women in LA: Xmas Gabber, the anime version of Laibach. Part of the new-dumb-hope here in LA. * Captain Ahab @ Rhinoceropolis in Denver: New software set allowing for non-stop music and improv mashups along side the usual homo-erotic nu-metal meets rave music insanity these guys always belt out, plus the love of a large sweaty audience made this show perfect. * Married In Berdechiev @ the Smell in LA: The stereotype of women in noise is that they just moan through a line-6 pedal. And unfortunatly, that is just too often too true. But here is a lady that takes that simple approach, combines it with a well trained voice, and amazing technical/compositional expertise to write songs unlike anything you've ever heard. Part noise, part K-Pop, all enchanting. * Robin Williams on Fire any show, anywhere: As hip sounding as XBXRX with a total post-Hairy Pussy thrash that brings a chaotic thrash to kids much younger than most experimental rock has access to. Ryan Wynns |fan, collector, third wheel Not really in any particular order ... 1. Michael Gira - Highline Ballroom, Manhattan, NY, September 14th Don't know what it is, he just has it. When he starts playing those bare-bones chord progressions and bellowing those singular melodies (or chants or intonements or hollers), I'm enthralled by every single utterance. 2. Visitations - King Street Manor, Northampton, MA, February 17th First time hearing this band. For whatever reasons, their name to me evokes "celestial drone", so I'm expecting something sort of like Stars of the Lid or Emeralds or maybe Windy and Carl ... Their set begins with feedback, drones, etc., so I seem to be vindicated ... but then comes folky acoustic guitar strumming, and suddenly they're singing a three-part harmony, but it's psychedelically twisted inside and out and ... oh my, that's the most beautiful, ghostly voice I've ever heard. This to me channels the spirit of things like Comus and Silmaril. I don't know how they get away with singing about Jesus and UFOs (and what's more, nearly moving me to tears in the process), but they do. 3. Wooden Wand / Gown / Alasehir / Kohoutek / GHQ - Unitarian Meetinghouse, Amherst, MA, April 27th Every single one of these bands just scorched. It was a scorched, scorching night. 4. Visitations / Jow-Jow the Death Knell Rung / Kurt Weisman - Time Machine Records and Books, Easthampton, MA, March 31st A very cool record store's grand opening party was a complete blast, and a real moment of congealing in the Pioneer Valley's scene. Visitations were as charming as ever, and Jow-Jow's dozen-people, psyched-out jam was an organic manifestation from the bowels of the earth.itself. 5. MV+EE with the Bummer (or was it Golden?) Road / Charalambides / GHQ / Warmer Milks - Montague Bookmill, Montague, MA, June 14th I'd never heard MV+EE this heavy. Erica was radiant on "Death Don't Have No Mercy". I tend to favor Charalambides at their most dissonant and pained, but Christina singing (sans guitar) melodically while Tom shredded in a dizzying-but-graceful way was nothing short of majestic. GHQ, once again, scorched, realizing one of the closest approximations of aural perfection in the universe. 6. Dredd Foole - Weathervane Music Hall, Brattleboro, VT, July 28th (part of The Festival of Endless Gratitude) Dan appropriates standard guitar chords, attunes his voice to them (and sometimes erupts into his trademark vocal freakouts), and just gives you himself, totally straight, no bullshit. During this performance, he seemed especially possessed by his songs/worlds - as, in turn, was I. 7. Owl Xounds Exploding Galaxy, Primordial Undermind, Greg and Amanda -Flywheel, Easthampton, MA, Feburary 18th Off-the-wall jazz, yet more scorched psych rock, and lost tribes channeled. 8. Black Forest/Black Sea - Time Machine Records and Books, Easthampton, MA, October 13th The songiest set I've seen them do. Just excellent guitar and cello playing, and singing, all around. From a traditional song to a Grateful Dead cover, they were just on. 9. Spires That In the Sunset Rise - Eagles, Northampton, MA, July 15th Spires. How to explain Spires, how to explain a Spires show? I don't know. But I like it. 10. Tatsuya Nakatani / David Stackenas / Bill Nace + Chris Cooper + Liz Tonne - Jones Library, Amherst, MA, 11/9 It made perfect sense that Nakatani and Stackenas were touring together. Both approached sound freshly and with uncanny, prodigy-like nuance. Likewise for locals Nace and Cooper, joined by Tonne, who's not of this world. 11. Okay, at the Valley Worm Fest at the Elevens in Northampton, MA on September 29th, there was this duo: a guy playing relatively technical, clean (as in not distorted) electric guitar that teetered on the line between dissonant and melodic, and a guy named David (who I'm told used to be in a band called Audible Puss) singing in a way that was quite disturbed and disturbing, like a mental patient in a trance, at times losing whatever was holding him back and breaking into a sustained falsetto wail. It was awesome. 12. Barn Owl / Cousin Id - Time Machine Records and Books, Easthampton, MA, April 28th With considerably different approaches (Barn Owl like mad scientists, Cousin Id rocking out - albeit weirdly - on guitar), both bands created churning chasms of sound. 13. Paul Metzger - Yod, Florence, MA, November 13th Maybe ... harsh raga? I dug it. 13. Moore + Flaherty + Corsano + Nace + Hartford / Emeralds / Sam Goldberg / 3 Legged Race / Cabolaides / Matt Krefting + John Shaw at a house on Fair Street in Northampton, MA, December 17 Sadly, I showed up late and missed a couple of these acts. Of what I did see ... some of them couldn't have been more different. But really good all-around. Mr. Goldberg was pleasantly quiet and thoughtful. Emeralds were doing something less like "ambient drone" than the previous two times I'd seen them and more like "electronic music". As for the five-piece noise supergroup (I jest) ... I expected it to be psychotic. It was. Great final show of the year. 13. MV+EE with The Golden (or Bummer?) Road / Thurston Moore (w/ John Moloney on drums) - Iron Horse Music Hall, Northampton, MA, January 31st Green Blues had just come out, and I was still trying to get a grapple on Matt and Erica's new direction. I was sort of confused, but in hindsight, what's not to love about "East Mountain Joint" and "Canned Happiness"? "Death Is My Friend" was great -- I don't know, there's just something about Erica singing about death, it's always really good. Thurston and Moloney mostly played what turned out to be songs that would be on Trees Outside the Academy -- I think this was before they'd even been recorded. I dug 'em right away ... the guitar licks and voice melodies were already just totally ablaze (it struck me that they were pure Thurston, they just had his touch, but were also something new), and Moloney's drumming was very tight, just totally dead-on. (I kinda wished he ended up on the album more, though absolutely no complaints about Steve Shelley.) I could go on ... of course, each of the following was the Event of Events in its own right: Gladtree, The Festival of Endless Gratitude, Shannon's Wickermania test pattern in Goshen, and Festival Ecstatique Thurston moore | ecstatic peace label creep 1. Rollins was in the audience losing his shit which added to the vibe. Up on the Sun is the best album ever made. 2) MARTIN REV at Knitting Factory Hollywood: is it true there were only ten paying customers? Obviously the malathion sprayings of the early 90s have resulted in severe, total brain loss among Angelenos. Just Rev whaling on the keys, dancing like a maniac, singing occasionally. Heavy discipline. Some moments of electric Miles rage made this fucking shit piss mall venue feel alive briefly. Often books good bands, but it's like going to a show in Downtown Disney. Suicide (I) is the best album ever made. 3) RESIDUAL ECHOES / NUDITY at Knitting Factory Hollywood: Another mindblowing set of extreme face and brain damage from R. Echoes (now apparently known as Adam Payne and the Residual Echoes, or Adam Payne an ze Residual Echoes), Adam just delivering one imaginative solo after another, playing his new punk/psych/fuck tunes that are too good. Either the last or penultimate show with Laena and Julian lineup. Wreckage. Rollins Band Life Time is the second best album ever made, after Residual Echoes Firsts. 4) ABE VIGODA / MIKA MIKO / NO AGE / PARTY FOUL pancake breakfast at the Smell: Abe Vigoda has crossed over from bananas to completely coconuts. These young men are live as fuck, and they have developed their own original outer bugfuck musical vocabulary, melodies up the wazoo, like 83 of em simultaneously. My fantasy is that they'll become the new Mahavishnu Orchestra but that would probably make them puke. They should be on SST. Party Foul was superlative than a mawfaw on drugs, ruined Long Beach (?) hardcore that hopefully is still playing. Will from Silver Daggers makes a hell of a pancake. Massive crowded as fuck turnout especially considering this joint started at 10 am on a Sunday. Pancakes are the best album ever coffee. 5) FLIPPER / MELVINS / MUDHONEY at Henry Fonda Theater: This show was part of the Don't Look Back series of live performances of beloved records -- Melvins did Houdini, Mudhoney did Superfuzz Bigmuff and early singles. Flipper was selling Generic t-shirts in the lobby, but opened with "Ha Ha Ha" as the curtain rose and did not play ONE SONG off Generic. It was radical. Falconi had to change a string after the first song, which took forever and was somehow perfect. New bassist Krist Novoselic started out staring down the crowd with intense hardcore bum-out glare, but by the end of the show he was dancing his famous loping joyous bass-dance. Happy to see him playing music again. Public Flipper Limited is the greatest album ever made. Melvins: D R U M S & Mudhoney closed with Keith Morris singing "Fix Me." Bullhead is the greatest album ever made. 6) REDD KROSS / SONIC YOUTH at Greek Theater: Obviously Redd Kross should play this size venue all the time. It was so good I had to kill someone I hated. Sonic Youth played more dynamic, open versions of the songs on Daydream Nation, and I thought it sounded better than the record, though I wish Mike Watt had been there to do "Providence" live. Dirty is the best album ever made. 7) SISSY SPACEK at the Smell: 13. 8) SUNN O))) at El Rey: memory erased. 9) WHITE SHIT / MEGAFUCKERS at the Canadian: White Shit is Andy Coronado, Jared Warren, Coady Willis, Dave Stone. Hopefully a record or a second performance from them someday. Jared's karate kicks are the stuff of hardcore legend. At this gig, Megafuckers was a punishing 'core outfit, before I joined the band and taught those guys how to mellow out and take five. Our new material is mature and eclectic, with fusion, dance and reggae influences; we will teach you how to relax your mind and body. I turned Tony M. on to some recordings of whale songs that we hope to include in our sound. 10) WHITE WIDOW at Spaceland: better than late Residents for sure. Psychedelic allegory with bunny costumes, pyramidal teepee, and a big wavy disorienting sound. Reclaims Billy Joel's "My Life" as a song of the people, and of the revolution. Chris Grier 1) Daniel A.I.U. Higgs at the Velvet Lounge, Washington DC. 2) Gladtree Fest, Hampshire College, Amherst, MA. Highlights: Vashti Bashers, Fat Worm Of Error, Noise Nomads, Byron Coley napping on the barn floor, apple cider, Dave Nuss being Dave Nuss. 3) Jack Rose, lotsa places. 4) Love of Diagrams, in NY and DC, several times. 5) Li'l Howlin' Wolf sitting in with damn near everyone at the Four Million Tongues Festival, Chicago, whether they wanted him to or not. I think the Wolf should be in every band, personally. 6) Eddy Current Suppression Ring from Melbourne, Australia, actually had DC folks dancing (!) I couldn't believe it. Velvet Lounge. 7) Thurston Moore and his Florida Avenue Grill trick. History was made. Rock and Roll Hotel, DC. 8) Religious Knives. 9) Max Ochs, fronting a boogie-rock band straight outta 1968. DC. 10) Puttin' On The Ritz, some restaurant in Little Ethiopia, DC. Suavest. Mayhem. Ever. 10a) Allison Wolfe's Sunday night Bingo-N'-Country gigs, St. Ex, DC. Norma Jones | wayward jobbies 1)Thurston Moore at the scala. a beautiful mix of the melodic maturity from trees and the stripped down passion of psychic hearts 2)patti at le roundhouse. a return and then some! 3)gang gang at ze cargo, music that was undefinable and very literally open to the audience. 4)6 organs at cargo again. ben n elisa cross the line between chaos and composition 5)rickie lee at jazz cafe. so late, so intense, a second coming that understands the pitfalls of sacrilege. 6)throb gris at the tate with d jarman. didn't kinda work but a grade A 4 effort, and still able to piss off proper avant garde kids. 7)keenan and nielsen at whitechapel. kiddie intersteller space. 8)greta lange at whitechapel. strong voice, messy guitarist, on the beat drumm drumms. 9)sonora at whitechapel. they were all over the place like the raincoats. and then they broke apart. 10)crawford marshall at meloi. heartfelt and true, with jokes. a tonic after the bang n crash of wolf eyes at the underworld, heh ha that's eleven.
